St Columba

Hello, and welcome to our St Columba class page!

Here on this page you will be able to see our exciting learning activities that we get up to with Miss Hardwick, Mrs Knowles and Miss Keeley.

Our History topic for this term is Great Firsts - Travel and Transport.

Our philosophical question is 'Do all journeys come to an end?'

Saint Columba

Each class at St. Patrick’s has a class saint that we learn about throughout the year. We talk about our Saint regularly and encourage the children to learn, talk and ask questions about their Saint. Each Saint has a Feast Day, where we celebrate their lives and what they did in order to become a Saint.

In Badgers, our class saint is Saint Columba. St. Columba was an Irish missionary who is credited with spreading Christianity in Scotland and the building of churches and abbey's. St. Columba's feast day is the 9th of June.

RE

As a faith school, RE as at the forefront of everything we do. We celebrate RE in many different ways across the school day, such as through Collective Worship, Godly Plays and Liturgical Prayers.

Our RE topics for Autumn are: Families, Belonging, and Advent. We will also celebrate Harvest, and have an alternative faith week where we learn about Hinduism.

Writing

Our current book for writing is 'Meesha Makes Friends'.

Meesha Makes Friends: A Big Bright Feelings Book

We will use this book to help us practise using our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops; to learn what verbs are (and expanded noun phrases for Year 2); and at the end of the unit to write our own diary entries.

Maths

Year 1 and Year 2 are both currently learning about place value within 20. We will then move onto addition and subtraction within 20, place value within 100, and shape. We will be using lots of practical resources in our maths such as number lines, counters, and numicon to help us.

History

As part of our learning in Autumn term, we will be learning about travel and transport. We will develop an understanding of where travel and transport came from and how it has developed through time to give us what we have today.

Science

In Autumn term, we will be learning about the human body. We will identify and name the parts of the human body, as well as undertake a range of experiments to explore our 5 senses. We will also learn about materials, and observe seasonal changes between Summer and Autumn, and Autumn and Winter.

Art

In Art, we have practised our drawing skills, using different types of lines to help us with our drawings. Our artwork will be inspired by the artist Jospehine Dellow, and we will use her work to inspire our own.

Computing

In computing, we will be exploring what IT is, the benefits of IT and how we can stay safe with it. We will then explore photography, thinking about what makes a good photograph, and deciding whether a landscape or portrait photo would be a better choice to take.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be thinking about the VIPs in our lives, and how we can build positive relationships with them. We will also explore online safety, and how to work as a team.

Music

In music, we will use Charanga to help us learn the songs 'hey you!' and 'ho ho ho'. We will perform these songs, and explore using the instruments alongside singing.

PE

In PE, we will explore balancing, changing direction when moving, and keeping control when running or moving with something. We will also perform a seaside dance.
